How Easy Is It To Switch Accountants?

Article Published: April 11, 2025

Pretty easy is the answer! Potential clients often think it will be a difficult and lengthy process however that isn’t the case.

The best time to switch is at year end as it gives a defined cut off date but you can change at any time. The next best time to switch is at the end of a vat quarter (if you are vat registered).

So How Does It Work?

You will sign up with us by approving your proposal and engagement letter and we then ask you to let your current accountant know that you’ll be switching to us and to let them know to release information to us. You’ll agree a date with them that they will stop acting and you will switch to us.

We will only contact your previous accountant once you give us the go ahead.

We will then drop them an email to ask for what we call professional clearance which is a handover of your information to us.

We will ask them for all of your HMRC references and to transfer your Xero and Dext subscription to us (if applicable). We will also ask for your previous years accounts, tax computations, tax returns and any other information we need from them to be able to take over.

If you are a limited company and your company registered address is at the previous accountants we can update the address for you to ours, your business premises or home address.

Once we have the HMRC references we apply for agent authorisation with HMRC meaning that we can speak to them on your behalf. They will post out a code for each area of tax (e.g. PAYE, Corporation Tax etc) and when the brown envelopes land we just ask that you send a picture of them to us.

Your previous accountant will usually email us across the information we need within a couple of weeks (depending on the switch date) and we carry on with our onboarding process and the team will begin looking after you.

If one of our clients has recommended us to you make sure you let us know so that we can send them a little gift as a thank you!
