If you’ve recently set up a limited company or are managing one, you’ll likely come across the term UTR — but what exactly is it, and why does it matter?
What Is a UTR?
UTR stands for Unique Taxpayer Reference. It’s a 10-digit number issued by HMRC to identify your company for tax purposes. It is your company tax ID — essential for filing Corporation Tax returns, communicating with HMRC, and paying your tax bill.
You’ll receive your company’s UTR shortly after registering with Companies House. HMRC sends it by post to your company’s registered address, usually within 10 working days.
Where Can You Find Your Company’s UTR?
You can locate your UTR in several places:
- On official letters from HMRC (e.g. Corporation Tax return reminders or payment notices)
- In your Business Tax Account online
- On your company’s previous tax returns
It may be labelled as:
- ‘UTR’
- ‘Tax reference’
- Or simply ‘Reference’
Lost Your UTR? Here’s How to Get It Back
If you’ve misplaced your UTR, don’t worry — you can request it again from HMRC. They’ll resend it to your company’s registered address within 10 working days.
